Every year The Foundation of Excellence/SPIDER gives students the opportunity to visit some of the country’s best colleges and universities. This year is no different. During the month of February students affiliated with the organization will be visiting the University of Florida as well as Florida State University. The overnight field trip takes diligent planning so that costs are kept to a minimum – a number of charter bus companies are researched so that the lowest cost can be reached while traveling on the safest equipment. Hotels are selected based upon maximum room occupancy, safety of the surrounding neighborhood, cleanliness and cost. Assuming a full bus (the higher the number of occupants on the bus, the lower the per student cost, as the price of the bus remains constant), the price for this field trip can range from $100 to $175.
This is not the only college visit that the students will be taking this year. Late in May, after AP testing is through, the students will be visiting a local school – the University of Miami. The proximity of the campus, means that this will be a day trip. Because this is a local field trip, a traditional school bus can be used. So costs for this field trip will be minimal.
FoE/SPIDER students will also be cheering their peers on at the Silver Knight Award Ceremony during late May. This trip is also local, which gives us the ability to once again use the inexpensive yellow school bus.
Field trips are a win-win for all – students and chaperones get a change from the school routine, while still learning.
